Perhaps because of it's remote location, the 70s rock scene in South Africa has taken on mythical status elevating prices of original SA prog and psych vinyl to ridiculous heights. One of the culprits was a fire that destroyed the tape archives of EMI Records, the main force behind the scene. There have not been any legit reissues over the years so not a lot of this music has been heard.
Abstract Truth was a quartet that recorded two gems from EMI Parlophone in 1970. The band was an offshoot of the now legendary Freedom's Children. The music of Abstract Truth is (not surprisingly) very much rooted in the English early prog sound. This set combines their complete second album, Silver Tree, with almost all of their debut Totum. The music reminds me quite a bit of Neon bands like Spring and Raw Material. Nice bits of swirling organ interplay with flute, sax and guitar with plenty of solos laced through out. If this band would have migrated to the UK they probably would have been huge. By the way, this is the first officially licensed version of these albums on CD. They were transferred from vinyl sources due to the demise of the masters. Although a little noisy in the odd spot it sounds reasonably good. Highly recommended.
