Agents Of Mercy - The Fading Ghosts Of Twilight (Digipak)

SKU FOXCD029
"New album from The Flower Kings/Transatlantic/Kaipa mainman Roine Stolt and singer Nad Sylvan (Unifaun) All started as a solo project of Roine but when Nad came onboard as a guest singer" it gradually changed into a fullblown prog album where Nad does most of the leads and backing vocals. Their common love of late 60's and early 70's prog is all over this album - Beatles, Genesis, Queen, ELO, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum and of course bits of both FlowerKings and Unifaun. A few favourite drummers tracked drums for the 12 tracks, Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson,Stickmen etc ) Zoltan Csörsz (TFK,Karmakanic) and Jimmy Keegan (Santana,Spocks Beard Live ) the eccentric Biggo Zelfries (Walrus Farm) did most of the piano and analogue keyboards and TFK bassist Jonas Reingold add some fretless bass spice too. Music is a bit more acoustic and maybe more down to earth than Flowerkings but still with a vivid orchestration to boot, vocal arrangements more elaborated and borrow from both Beatles,ELO,Queen and Steely Dan. First edition is a LTD digipack with a full 77 minutes of music ."

I find this release quite weak, Nads vocals are dead on, but the song writing is just not there, I had a hard time getting into this cd...

Second the judgment that this is essentially a so-so TFK album with a different vocalist. Interesting to see Stolt working with Unifaun's Nad Sylvan, but the songs on this CD only accentuate how far Stolt's songwriting has fallen from TFK's glory days, and how good Sylvan's songwriting was on "Unifaun". Stolt has all the songwriting credits here, and there are few hooks to be heard at all. Some superb performances, but not too many memorable tunes. Worthwhile for people willing to take the time and really listen, but not as immediately accessible or appealing as Unifaun's CD or TFK classics like "World of Adventures" or "Retropolis". This is closer to the uneven quality of "Paradox Hotel".
