Amber Light, The - Play (Ltd. Digipak)

SKU 79772
Superball Music is the new sister label coordinated by Thomas Waber, supreme leader of Inside Out. The focus of the label is modern progressive rock. Bands already signed include Oceansize, Pure Reason Revolution, Trail Of The Dead, and now Germany's The Amber Light. There is a definite Porcupine Tree vibe going on here (think Deadwing) as well as influences from bands like Radiohead and Sigur Ros creeping in. If you are tired of the same old same old check these guys out. They are clearly looking forward. Oh yeah - this initial pressing comes in a digipak.

First off, can we chill with the whole thing of comparing every guitar based band that comes down the pike to Porcupine Tree? For one thing, that leads to false expectations and unfair disappointment. The Amber Light sound NOTHING like PTree. Perhaps you can stretch your imagination, and hear a bit of a Steven Wilson/Thom Yorke lilt to the work of the vocalist in some of the softer songs. Mostly, this is a solid, more or less mainstream alt-rock album that I didn't really begin to appreciate until I listened to it a second time, this time for what the band sounded like on its own, rather than being disappointed that they DIDN'T sound like someone else. While there is nothing wildly innovative here -- and it's hardly proggy at all -- the songs are good and show this band has a lot of promise once they tighten things up a bit. The ballads are as effective as the rockers and demonstrate some good range in the songwriting. But don't go into this expecting "Deadwing," for God's sake.

funny...I found that I liked it very much, no not prog but post rock style....sometime we need to step out of the prog box people, there is other music out there!

This ain't prog. Crappy emo-pop maybe but definitely nothing remotely progressive going on here. This one got recycled as a beer coaster... :-) Leyth
