When was the last time you heard a good neoclassical album? Symphony X doesn't do it any more...even Artension has moved on to a variant of this long running style. Artension guitarist Roger Staffelbach has returned to his neoclassical roots with this new band Angel of Eden. He's put together a solid band as well - Evidence One's Carsten "Lizard" Schulz is on vocals, keyboardist Mistheria, and Evidence One drummer Rami Ali is on board as well. Plenty of interesting guests crop up including Steve DiGiorgio (Testament ao), John West (Royal Hunt), David Shankle (Manowar), and Ferdy Doernberg (Royal Silk). Lots and lots of crunch here but Staffelbach constantly returns to familiar territory evoking the spirit of those great early Artension discs. Schulz is a great singer - it seems inevitable that eventually he's going to wind up with a major band. Probably because I haven't heard a solid album in this vein in some time I was more amenable to the discs charms. While the originality police may be on red alert I can still enjoy the vibe.
