Anthropia - The Ereyn Chronicles Part 1 - The Journey Of Beginnings

SKU MA9087
At first I thought this was going to be another Rhapsody clone but I was wrong. Anthropia is the creation of multi-instrumentalist Hugues Lefebvre, who goes by the singular name Hugo. He plays all the instruments except drums and percussion which are handled by Damian Rainaud. This is the first of a trilogy...and yes it is an epic fantasy tale. The Ereyn Chronicles are based on the works of fantasy novelist Quentin Borderie. There are a multitude of influences at work here - the straight ahead power metal of Iron Maiden - the neoclassical stylings of Symphony X - even prog rock stalwarts of Kansas and Rush. The album is laid out like a rock opera with some guest vocalists playing out their parts. It definitely has that big sound but of course nothing as big as epic Hollywood metal kings Rhapsody. One funny note - the band and label mention Genesis as an influence which frankly I didn't hear...until the opening notes of "Where the Secrets Lie" which is either an homage or a direct rip off of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". The disc comes with a bonus video clip.

Very cool progressive metal from france. Under-rated. Its neo-classical, heavy and extermely progressive. I hear a ton of influences - Dream Theater, Superior, D. Townsend, Queensryche, DealSoul Tribe (few parts remind me of them). Clean harmonized vocals, perfect fit. Dueling guitars (classical and electric), great keys, drummer smokes. Production values high too. All in all, any prog metal head owes it to themself to check 'em out. Perfect for this genre. I give it a 4.5 for this genre, overall a soild 4.

Surprised by the reviews. I grabbed this one when it came out and still go back to it. Great blend of progressive and power. Lots of great instrumental sections that are unearthed after repeated listens. Maybe to progressive for the power metal crowd? My only explanation.

Strictly ok prog metal. Maybe I'm a little burned out on the fantasy metal thing but this almost sounds like Rhapsody after they were forced to change their name to Rhapsody Of Fire. IMHO, you would be better served by acquiring Adagio's early output. Leyth

Huge disappointment. Strongly recommend you try and listen to some before spending your hard earned cash. With a seasoned vocalist this may have been better but even then the songs are really not very strong. In fact it's all a bit boring. Way too many other bands doing this stuff far better.
