The description for this disc was going to be so simple to write...but immediately I discovered this was not to be. Aquaplange has its roots in a popular British Yes cover band called Fragile. Apparently Rick Wakeman has rendered huzzahs on the band and they have even played with Steve Howe. The material has been written over a 10 year period and the recording features past and present members of Fragile. The fly in the ointment is that I actually listened to the disc and it sounds absolutely nothing at all like Yes!!
Make no mistake - Aquaplanage is definitely a prog band - in fact at the opening notes a very British sounding one...but that changes quickly as well. The album kicks off with the 15 minute "Ode To Grey Mornings" which initially sounds like early Jethro Tull. Very quickly the band changes directions and the music takes on a decidedly American flavor for a good chunk of the album. I'm reminded very much of early Kansas and perhaps a trace of Starcastle of Styx (at their proggiest moment). By the middle of the album the band shifts directions again. The quiet "Nature's Sunday" sounds a bit like Traffic crossed with Spring. Its all extremely well played and constructed - just don't expect a Yes album going in and you'll have much to emerse yourself in.
