Aurora Project, The - Unspoken Words

SKU DVS001
The label and band list Porcupine Tree, Tool, Pink Floyd, and Anathema as influences. Sound familiar? Suprisingly although they draw from the same gene pool, The Aurora Project do not sound very much like Riverside. The predominant influence seems to be that of Tool although you can definitely hear the P-Tree sound at times. Unspoken Words is a conceptual work conceived by the band's guitarist and is based on a "spiritual journey". The use of narration moves the story along echoing works like Wakeman's "Journey To The Center Of The Earth". These parts have an icy sci-fi quality amplified by the crystalline production. Frequently the music ventures off into heavier terrain but I would be hard pressed to really call this metal per se. The use of choir and flute amplifies the symphonic element reminding me of the various Ayreon projects. This Dutch band has started off their career with an ambitious effort and I get the sense that this is the start of something big. Get in on the ground floor - highly recommended.

Agree with B. Ricci's review above. I think this release exhibits much more of what I was hoping to find on their later release. Very well done prog rock with solid melodic ideas and vocals. Some of the narrative parts are a bit overlong but they do help to tell the story. Very enjoyable. Leyth
