Callisto - Providence

SKU FS121CD
I can't say I knew anything about this Finnish band until a recent press release caught my attention. Callisto has been around for awhile (I believe this is their 6th album?). The band has been categorized as post-metal. The thing that intrigued me was the pronouncement that bands such as King Crimson and Opeth weighed heavily as an influence and the album is awash in Mellotron. I can't say I hear a tremendous Crimson influence but Opeth definitely. At this point the distinction between rock and metal is so blurred as to be useless. As Porcupine Tree gets heavier and Opeth gets "proggier" what does it really mean to pigeonhole a band into a genre that doesn't quite fit them but sort of does. Yes there are definitely metal elements from the crunchy guitars to the occasional coarse vocals but if you listen objectively you hear something more in line with Anekdoten, Riverside, Opeth, Porcupine Tree. Something contemporary but progressive. If Landberk had stayed together it would have sounded something like this. By the way if you are curious the disc has 'tron all of the place and still rocks to high hell. I can't speak for the band's previous output but this is quite impressive and definitely has me looking forward to hearing more. Highest recommendation.

I don't care if they blur the distinction between rock and metal, or if it sounds like Opeth and King Crimson (once again); what more or less destroyed this otherwise good CD, was the attempt to mix good, clean vocals and music with goofy, cookie monster screams. It's like they just tacked those on at the last minute to try and reach two different audiences...like trying to mix cold soda and hot coffee.
