Cosmograf - When Age Has Done Its Duty

SKU 201107
Third album from this band/project led by multi-instrumentalist Robin Armstrong. This has the quintessential British neo-prog sound. Armstrong is aided by a number of guest musicians including Bob Dalton (It Bites), Steve Thorne, Lee Abraham, Simon Rogers (Also Eden), Steve Dunn (Also Eden), Luke Machin (The Tangent), Huw Lloyd-Jones (Unto Us) and Dave Ware. There is a bit of a singer/songwriter feel not unlike Guy Manning's work but with a bit more playing going on. Vocals have a real emotional impact and I can tell that Armstrong has listened to a Peter Hammill album or two along the way. Keys tend to the atmospheric side with the build up and release courtesy of some tasteful guitar solos. Quite nicely done!

This was one of my favorites from last year! The description nails it, when it talks about 'emotional impact', but I would add that along with the vocals, the music carries that same impact. As someone pushing 50, this album can be a kick in the gut. Robin stays away from descriptions of the beauty of getting old and focuses more on the 'not so beautiful side of the deal'. If an album can be 'depressingly uplifting', this is the one. Very beautiful and highly recommended!
