Rise Above Records head maven Lee Dorrian has always been enamored with early 70s British prog. On occassion the label has veered away from stoner rock and signed excellent retro-prog bands like Litmus and Blood Ceremony. Add Diagonal to the list and quite frankly they are the best of the bunch. This 7 piece band from Brighton recreate a sound that could easily be placed as a 1972 Vertigo or RCA Neon release. Were you to tell me this was some arcane Brit-prog band of yore I'd fall for it hook line and sinker.
The band lineup consists of 2 keyboardists, 2 guitarists, bass, drums, and reeds. Actually all the members are multi-instrumentalists so there is a lot more going on than what I'm listing. The vocals are probably the weak point of the band - they vary from "fine" to "ehh", depending on who is singing lead. Mostly they harmonize - again evoking "that sound". The album consists of five long tracks. Big fat swirls of organ, synth leads, stinging guitars that solo and interlock, and beautiful sax and flute will permeate your membrane. Musical reference points would be Soft Machine, King Crimson, Tonton Macoute, Spring, and Fantasy. This is a blissful trip in the Wayback Machine that should be at the top of your Buy or Die list. I can still smell the patchouli oil...
