The fifth studio album from Edenbridge comes packed with subtle but effective surprises. The primary difference that instantly hits you is the production. The Grand Design is produced by Threshold's Karl Groom and I think his touches are evident and kicked the band in the tush a bit. The sound is even more grandiose and bombastic than before. Sabine's vocals are layered and layered like vintage Queen. Edenbridge will never be confused for a power band - don't ever expect Nightwish. Instead you get angelic vocals, gobs and gobs of orchestral keys, and steady crunch from guitarist/composer Lanvall. As I listen to TGD it just seems fresher and makes me think that in retrospect the band has been coasting a bit. Sometimes change is good - The Grand Design is an obvious example. I'm not sure the band will expand their fan base much with this release but it will definitely put a big grin on the face of their existing fans. It did for me. Highly recommended.
