Edensong - The Fruit Fallen

SKU 844553001554
This one fell on me like a bomb! Edensong is a New York based progressive rock collective orchestrated by composer/vocalist/guitarist James Byron Schoen. He obviously has a love for old school British progressive rock as undercurrents of bands like Gentle Giant, Genesis, Jethro Tull and Gnidrolog sweep through the compositions. While the references to these bands are apparent the music doesn't sound dated at all. Schoen has the assistance of a number of musicians with flute and keyboards having a large role in the soundscape but you can hear violin, cello, and assorted odd percussion cropping up constantly. At times the guitars get nice and crunchy but never cross over the line into metal. Great recording and an exceptional mastering job from Bob Katz to boot. There is so much going on in the mix that it will take many listens to peel back all the layers of this one and absorb it all. I can't remember the last time I said this about a debut release from a prog band - BUY OR DIE!

Part of what makes this disc so special is the passion of the vocalist and the lyrical content. This is very serious subject matter that is dealt with very emotionally. The character of the vocals enhance rather than detract from the great compositions and instrumentation. The songs are incredibly intricate and full of sound without losing any of the details. Truly an amazing feat.

This is a really ambitious prog rock project which achieves many of its goals but falls short in one critical department: Vocal delivery. While Byron Schoen is a more-than-capable instrumentalist, his singing is far from competent. IMHO, he needs a solid and expressive vocalist who can communicate the great musical ideas that permeate these songs. Can you imagine what Steve Walsh would sound like singing this material? My two cents... Leyth

Brilliant album! Best stuff I've heard in years. Great throwback to the old classics like Tull, Genesis, and Gentle Giant yet maintains a modern edge with it's own unique style. Throw in some world music there with the Indian tabla and African drums I heard. Bound to be a classic. Jacob France

This is a stunning CD from a band led by 25 year old James Byron Schoen. The music is tough to categorize, but there's lots of acoustic guitar, flute, violin, some crunch and well placed time changes. It's really something new with every listen and at 70 minutes, the band can really stretch out. This is truly an amazing debut worthy of Ken's coveted "Buy or Die" designation. Mike
