I've been living with this disc for a couple of months now and it just gets deeper and deeper for me with every listen. Patrick Forgas is a French drummer who made an album called "Cocktail" in the late 70s but didn't generate much of a buzz outside of some diehard Canterbury-files. This is the third album from his brilliant new 8 piece outfit. The basic recording for "Soleil 12" was recorded live at Le Triton, but with all of the overdubbing it's not presented as a live disc. The music loosely fits into the Canterbury style but a closer comparison would be to the Mothers lineup with Jean-Luc Ponty (minus any attempt at humor). There is a maturity about these expansive compositions that allows each musician to stand out when soloing and at the same time much electricity is generated between the ensemble. This disc will easily make my Top 10 list for 2005. Grab it!
