Kolkhöze Printanium - Vol. 1 Kolkhöznitsa

On occassion I've been known to stumble around on Myspace checking out bands. Kolkhoze Printanium is my latest "discovery" and its a real deep listen.

KP is a five piece French ensemble put together by keyboardist Paul Brousseau. Besides keys, instrumentation consists of guitar, sax, bass and drums. This is one of those albums that doesn't fit neatly into a genre. It would be easiest to classify it as jazz rock as there are aspects of Brousseau's electric piano that recall Hancock and Zawinul. There are avant touches at times that conjure an RIO feel. Underneath it all is a driving rhythm section that takes on a zeuhl-like ferocity. This all melds together into one exotic musical stew that is one compelling listen. On the band's Myspace page, Brousseau actually lists Genesis as a musical influence. There is one vocal track on the disc called "Mana". Curiously his voice and the vocal melody lines that will instantly remind of "Supper's Ready" (really!). Its the closer to the album and a totally uncharacteristic but it works.

Kolkhöze Printanium's debut is a strange musical journey with some exhilarating bumps in the road but its a very satisfying trip that I urge you to take. Highest recommendation.
