Too often the term "fusion" is used to describe what is essentially instrumental hard rock. Fusion as it was first envisioned was a marriage of rock and jazz. The term has mutated over the years and more often than not there is too little jazz in the mix (if at all). MCM is the trio of Alex Masi, Randy Coven, and John Macaluso. These three virtuosos did a world tour of which this disc is a documentation. The basis of this music is strongly rooted in improvisation. The heads of the tunes might be composed but generally speaking its a free for all in a style similar to what Hellborg, Lane and Sipe were doing. 1900: Hard Times is a true fusion album - in the broadest sense. In addition to hard rock there are strong elements of jazz and world music all blending seamlessly. Each of these guys overplays a bit but that's what they do - Randy Coven will never be the master of subtlety (that's not what you buy a disc like this for). So you get a whole lot of notes served up fast and furious but with intelligence. A slamming album that you can easily immerse yourself in. Highly recommended.
