I'm going to be a bit biased here...the author Jeff Wagner happens to be a friend of mine. That having been said it doesn't cloud my judgement of what a brilliant tome he has presented us with. Many of you may be familiar with Jeff's work as editor/writer at Metal Maniacs. Plain and simple he is a superb writer with as intensive a knowledge of progressive metal as you will find. He eats breathes and sleeps this stuff. So on the first try he's hit it out of the ballpark with this deep, and most likely first, study of the progressive metal genre. The book actually starts off explaining the outgrowth of progressive metal from progressive rock and the importance and influence of the 70s bands like King Crimson, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, etc. Obviously bands like Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Voivod get a lot of attention but Jeff shows off his depth of the subject by covering less popular bands as well. Cynic, Watchtower, Enslaved, Arcturus, etc - he really touches all the bases - one of your favs is most likely here as well. Jeff was even smart enough to interview yours truly and he was kind enough to mention some Sensory bands. The book is packed with photos - many never seen before. Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson wrote the foreword for the book. This is 364 pages that exudes pure love for progressive music. No one else should bother - unless Jeff decides to write another book on the subject nothing will top this. Highest recommendation...and a fantastic Christmas present.
