I'm going to pat myself on the back for a moment and at the same time take a trip down memory lane...
In the later half of 1998 I was digging the hell out of Nathan Mahl's "The Clever Use Of Shadows" (and selling quite a bit of them to boot). Jump forward a few months when Rob LaDuca and Chad Hutchinson were looking to fill a vacated slot for the inaugural Nearfest concert. I quickly suggested Nathan Mahl - they were relatively local and eager for the chance. I sent Rob and Chad a disc and the invitation quickly followed.
I'm not sure if many of the sleepy people in attendance that Sunday morning were actually aware of the band. Perhaps in some way that helped set off a spark with the audience - taking them completely off guard. They were not expecting what unfolded - a dazzling display of musicianship, creativity and music that championed the progressive rock spirit. In short order the band blew the roof off the place! The set features a large helping of material from "Clever Use" and a nice little taste of "Heretik". Sadly "Clever Use Of Shadows" is out of print. If you want to hear the material performed by the lineup that recorded it this is now the only way...
The kick off release from Nearfest Records is a great one. Highest recommendation.
