Oceans Of Sadness - The Arrogance Of Ignorance

Peculiar but interesting band from Belgium. Oceans Of Sadness mix progressive, death and doom metal influences freely and even incorporate some 70s flavors as well. The music is a bit off-kilter in the same way that Pain Of Salvation used to be. Voc...

New release from this fascinating avant garde metal band from Belgium. Vocally and stylistically the band is all over the map but they tie it all together seamless and that's got to be a hell of a battle. Vocals range from extreme coarse to highly melodic - they even have the amazing Annlouice Loegdlund of Diablo Swing Orchestra guesting on one track. The music keeps you off balance through out - blast beats, symphonic keys, crushing riffs all melded together. OoS makes me think of a cross between Pain Of Salvation and Arcturus with a touch of Opeth thrown in for good measure. You want to hear something different? You need to check this disc out. A smoker! Highly recommended.

This is my favorite metal album of the past couple years. Though all over the place, the music has a lot of surging & up-tempo sections. Like a thrash band gone proggy, with a dark element. My favorite track, From Then On, is actually a ballad. Great heavy production. A concept album dealing with the vocalist's philosophies of life and living. His earnestness comes through. Opeth's singer guests on one track. Check them out!

I've got mixed feelings about this. I feel this will cost the band much, due to the two (unreconciled) vocal styles. Many prog fans have decided not to get this due to the gross amount of death metal yips. Many fans of death find they don't like the "clean moments". It's hard for me, because on one hand the band is quite inventive and keeps you off-guard with their crazy and energetic sound. But that energy is broken to bits by metalcore/death screaming. With a vocal style that fits, I'd have given this 4-5 stars.. I had to say no. Next time?
