Octafish are an extraordinary German ensemble that began life in the early 90s as a Frank Zappa cover band. "Land Unter" is their debut release from 1995 and is an utter scorcher.
The band consists of 5 members on guitar, synth, tenor sax, bass (and Chapman Stick) and drums. They call their style of instrumental music "Industrial Fake Jazz" and it's a heady blend of Zappa-isms, heaviness and complexity. Fusion fans should gobble this up. Stunning musicianship is the order of the day but it's not a wankfest - you have to have chops to play music composed on this level. Highest recommendation to fans of Mr. Zappa and fusion in general. I'd heave this over to the "essential" pile.
