Operatika - The Calling

SKU SC168-2
Long awaited debut release from this New Jersey based symphonic power metal band with roots in Russia/Ukraine. After teasing us with an EP the band has hooked up with Scarlet Records. The band features the talents of female vocalist Slava Popova and guitarist Bill Visser. To get to the heart of the matter, the music bears the heavy imprint of Nightwish. Visser tends to go for a blinding quick shred style and its complemented well by classically trained keyboardist Anna Dok who adds a neoclassical/symphonic element that again fits the Nightwish mold. The band is without a bassist so they brought in Symphony X's Mike Lepond to play all the bass parts. I can't say its particularly original but if you like the Nightwish sound you'll find much to enjoy here.

Definitely not my cup of tea. To these ears, this recording is so devoid of any musical depth that it's hard to even fathom what the band was thinking. The songs largely consist of Bill Visser trying to "out-Yngwie" Yngwie in the meaningless neo-classical shred department. Vocalist Slava Popova has a pleasant enough voice and tries hard to make something out of the muck Visser hands her, but to no avail. You have been warned so proceed with caution. Leyth
