Paatos - Breathing (Digipak)

Fifth album from this Swedish band. Paatos are a contemporary post-rock band that crosses over into the progressive rock genre. They utilize vintage keyboard sounds as the background for the emotional vocals from Petronella Netermalm. Not a band about chops - this is more of an emotional roller coast ride as opposed to technical progressive rock. I'm reminded a bit of Portishead but with more of a prog element. Another comparison that comes to mind is some of the poppier elements of White Willow's Sacrament disc.

This is easily the best and most accomplished release from this excellent Swedish art rock band. while it has lots in common with the musical approach found on Silence Of Another Kind, on this one, Petronella's vocals in particular shine beautifully. Her delivery runs the range from delicately fragile to raggedly impassioned while consistently hitting the mark. There's also more of a bounce to these compositions, largely driven IMO by new bass player Ulf Ivarsson's contributions. Overall stunning and one of my early favorites from 2011. Leyth
