Paatos - Timeloss

SKU SPV085-40762
First release from this new band formed by Reine Fiske and Stefan Dimle, founders of the now defunct Landberk. The music captures the sombre moodiness of Landberk's later efforts. Flute, mellotron, organ and mournful guitarwork weave in and out creating a sound tapestry for the lucious vocals of Petronella Nettermalm that reminds me quite a bit of White Willow. The production has a real 70s analog feel as though this was some long lost album from 1972. This is not a fiery prog inferno - instead its a smoldering fire of moods and textures perfect for a midnight rendevous.

Paatos was born from the ashes of Landberk, a famous underground Swedish prog band. Petronella Nettermalm and her husband Ricard (drummer) are the focal points of the band. Ricard's drumming is exemplary throughout the album adding wonderful percussive textures to each of the songs. Petronella can best be described as sounding like Icelandic sensation Bjork. She doesn't have great range because of her rather delicate sounding vocie, but she fits the music rather well. This is the band's most progressive recording with plenty of mellotron, guitars, and percussion. The music can also be quite dynamic, going from soft to sonic assault and back again. "Tea" is a song about Nettermalm's daughter and is the only song sung in Swedish. It sounds like a jazzy lullaby and is quite beautiful. The real highlight is "Quits" which features some trance style music which is definitely original in the progressive world. Too bad they never explored this melding of genres further. This is a incredible debut release from a band that cut their teeth in other bands. The chemistry is quite remarkable and it shows.
