Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun (CD/DVD-A)

SKU KSCOPE102
This is the last of the Porcupine Tree back catalog to be remixed/remastered by Steven Wilson. I'm not sure why he has a affection for DVD-A discs as opposed to hybrid SACD but he does so we live with it. Here is what is hidden inside the sexy super jewelbox: first off you get a CD with the entire album remixed into glorious 2.0 stereo. The second disc is a DVD-A (make sure it is compatible with your DVD player as not all of them can play these discs - most can). The album is remixed into 5.1 surround sound plus you get the stereo mix in 24 bit hi-rez. The DVD-A also features three bonus tracks (also mixed into 5.1).

The only reason there are DVD Audio versions is because that is the preferred format between the two that the LABEL supports. Steven had no idea of either of formats existence until the label approached him to do it. As for the transcoding issue, they would have to record in pure DSD to avoid the digital signal processing dilemma. Modern artists like their studio trickery way too much to embrace this as a recording medium. Essentially, except for maybe classical or jazz artists, there are few who are capable of blowing it out live and would take the time to record their music organically and transparently. Therefore, there are not really very many "true"representatives to base superiority on. At least, in the modern contemporary setting.

Another great high resolution surround mix from Steven Wilson. For those that don't understand DVD-a vs. SACD, it's pretty simple. The original masters were digitally recorded at 24/48 using PCM audio. SACD uses DSD audio (1 bit / 2780khz) requiring transcoding from PCM to DSD. That makes no sense, so Steven wisely chose to stick with PCM audio and the DVDa platform. Also, Steve likes his visual presentations, something SACD would not provide. Also, DVDa allows playback in 5.1 for regular dvd users, though in a reduced quality provided by Dolby Digital. This, again, is something SACD does not provide. Lastly, SACD's DSD format is really intended for capturing analog masters or for "direct to digital" recordings. For high res releases of existing digitally recorded material, the DVDa format is best used.
