One of the great fusion albums from the MPS label, finally available on CD and it's been given the royal treatment from Promising Music. This is the first of two albums from Pork Pie, the band formed by keyboardist Jasper Van't Hof, saxophonist Charlie Mariano, and guitarist Philip Catherine. The rhythm section changed on the second album but the first one features Jean Francois Jenny-Clarke on bass, and Aldo Romano on drums. While Pork Pie is clearly thinks of themselves as a jazz band there is a strong electric component that adds an ever present rock element. I tend to think of this band as a jazzier version of Secret Oyster. Van't Hof concentrates on electric piano and organ and Philip Catherine shows why he was the perfect replacement to Jan Akkerman in Focus. The member that really experiments the most is Charlie Mariano. In addition to soprano sax he plays bamboo and altosax flutes. The soprano sax reminds of Karsten Vogel's work with Secret Oyster (I guess I mentioned them already). The album has some gorgeous spacey interludes but is primarily a high energy affair. One of the great ones and highly recommended.
