Intoxicating conceptual work conceived by a British multi-instrumentalist who goes by the singular name Rain. The story which unfolds is based on a series of postcards sent by a young traveller as he ventures across America. Narrator Rob Brown has one of the most soothing voices I've ever heard. I was having flashbacks to David Hemmings and Journey Of The Center Of The Earth! Rain doesn't go it alone. There are a number of other musicians contributing drums, viola, violin, cello and choir. The most notable contributor is original Earthworks member Iain Ballamy on sax. The music is purely about mood and atmosphere - there are vocals but there is an orchestral feel that reminds me at various times of Pink Floyd, Camel, Anthony Philips, Supertramp, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel, Genesis. No flashy playing here, this is an album more about the heart rather than the head. A nicely produced work that has a quiet confidence and grandeur. An extremely compelling listen and highly recommended.
