Symphony X - Paradise Lost (Digipak)

Other Titles By This Artist

First album - yeah the one featuring the other vocalist. Not bad effort but only a foreshadowing of greatness to come. New version (not remastered) comes in a digipak and has part one of a band interview and a screensaver.

The long awaited follow up to The Odyssey is finally here! This is without question the band's heaviest work to date. Gone are the lush orchestrated days of old. Paradise Lost shows one pissed off band. The music is much more in your face. Mike Romeo's solos are insane but Mike Pinella's keys follow him every step of the way. I never heard Russell Allen sing with so much agression but always has power reserves to spare. When the dust settles Paradise Lost will leave you exhausted. It's a hell of a ride! Highly recommended.

Totally mind blowing cd. This album is killer from beginning to end , including the ballads. The last song has some of the coolest riffs i've heard and it doesn't let up. Symphony X has been my favorite band since 1996's " Divine Wings..." came out and every album just gets better all the time.

You have to get this. There is no other band like Symphony X. Simply amazing guitar - again - from Michael Romeo and great although more agressive vocals from Russell Allen. This is a can't miss and a candidate for best release this year. I loved V and Odyssey but think this is even better.

Hummm, well, what we have on most SX albums is a merging your main & typical prog/power metal influences, along with Queen, and a bit of Dio(vocals) mixed in. Sometimes SX is pretty heavy for prog/power metal, which is really why people like this better than say, Dream Theater. After the first ultra-cheesy/filler track, they blast off pretty well with a hard hitter. But the thud-type riff/rhythm gives way to some yanking guitar riffs - that sound recycled from virtually ever other old rock band. By the 3rd track (at least in the order I heard them) it sounds like the vocalist is forcing his voice, and even losing it in places. This song just becomes a big wall of noise..awful. The next track, "Serpents Kiss," sounds like another mess of yanking blues/rock riffs (like old, old rock, only made louder to try and sound heavy). At this point I'm starting to think this is nothing more than Whitesnake with a cold. The next track is another boring tune that sounds like it was cut from exactly the same cloth as the last two, only toned down to show more of its pop/rock-like sound. There is a chorus here that is pretty catchy, so it partly redeems the song. Still, there is endless yank-guitar messing with the otherwise good flow, so I'm mixed on this one.. I don't need to go track-by-track anymore, but let's say that I pay close attention to many different factors on a metal disc, and what I hear is more noise and rehashing than good music. I do hear lots of potential, but the problems are many. I do notice how the album starts much faster (while still sounding precise) than how it continues and ends. Lastly, the forced and scratchy vocals really sound bad after even one track, let alone 3 or 4...With the two main negatives of bad riffs/ bad vocals, 2 stars is the best I can do for it, and that is mainly for the first track. I'm also noticing that the songs have so many interruptions; just when you start to have a good groove, they tear it away and lose my attention......
