Symphony X - Iconoclast (2CD Special Edition)

SKU NB2737-2
Iconoclast is Symphony X's 8th album and debut for their new home at Nuclear Blast. All traces of the symphonic neoclassical metal that characterized their sound through V are now gone. The band made a stylistic change with The Odyssey, developed it further with Paradise Lost and now have really locked into their own identity with Iconoclast. It would be simple to call this power metal but you don't have normally hear a guitarist in a power metal band playing they type of leads that Mike Romeo conjures up. He is one of the most inventive guitarists in metal. Combined with Mike Pinella symphonic accents the progressive elements come through loud and clear. There are a lot of great vocalists in metal but some are a little better than others. Then you get vocalists like Jorn Lande and Russell Allen who are a lot better than the others. Allen comes through with another vocal tour de force. Yes I miss the days of Divine Wings Of Tragedy and Twilight In Olympus but I'm on board with the new sound. Its heavier - crunchier - more direct - but never dull. Romeo makes sure of it - he just bludgeons you with creativity.

This is the deluxe digipak edition that comes with three extra tracks and special packaging from Warren Flanagan. Highly recommended.

Almost 83 minutes of prog metal bliss. Continues the heavy & technical direction of Paradise Lost, everyone plays their asses off. Beautiful foldout packaging too.

Actually, I hate prog for the most part...but, this album is beyond a masterpiece! Heavy, dark, hooks in EVERY chorus on the album. I always liked SYMPHONY X, but never loved them. That has changed a million times over. They turned the prog down and the power up. I love this album beyond words so badly that I'll feel guilty if I stop listening to it. I'd give this album 105 stars if I could!

Great band,My favorite all time band to see live!HUGE FAN! but is it just me, or does anybody think this is a little too dark for them? This is even farther in the non melodic direction.I found myself thinking of other music I could have got wile listening to this a few times. In the past, I found the last five CDs mesmerizing. This is a step down for the mighty band, although quite above average to be sure, and worth getting !I just really miss the older sound with the melody of Russell Allen,no vocal line sticks in my head here.V,The Odyssey,Divine Wings,Twilight, and Paradise L were as close to perfection as a band can get!!
