Unexpect - Fables Of The Sleepless Empire (Digipak)

Beautiful new album from this great Quebecois metal band. Unexpect create a twisted form of progressive metal. They incorporate prog, death, and carnival metal keeping you off kilter through out. The band utilizes beauty and the beast vocals - Leilindel's sweet tones are offset by guitarist Syriak's coarse barking. Instrumentation is a bit left of center - dual guitar, violin, 9 (!) string bass, and drums sewn together with symphonic keys. The guitars create a wall of crunch in counterpoint to the violin leads - some of which are controlled and quiet and other lead lines evaporate into space. This mish-mosh of styles dump the band into the avant metal category alongside Diablo Swing Orchestra and Dakyra. While none of them are really similar in sound they all seem to use the same "you've never heard anything like this before" esthetic. Highly recommended.

I've heard it all... but somehow I've never heard anything quite like this. To be so original and skilled in a sea of clones is a major achievement. It makes me very happy indeed to hear such a glorious masterpiece of music that this album is.

Those who are saying that stuff like this is the same ol' & cookie-cutter, as well as labeling it "pseudo" metal (all that metalcore or teen-type stuff with the screaming), have gotten my attention this time. The reason for this agreement, is that I think some slightly weird instrumental play cannot convince me this is anything new. The vocals are in the forefront, and so they pause any discerning individual's listening enjoyment. I was bored, but hey, maybe they will go instrumental next time...
