"The United Jazz + Rock Ensemble was a live event of a very special kind. This “band of bandleaders” – emerging in the mid-1970s from Wolfgang Dauner’s “Elfeinhalb Ensemble”, which played in programmes on the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) – was made up of only proven masters, who could structure musical processes as expertly as they could shine, sensitively and with virtuosity, in complex improvisations. Thus the original CDs “Die Neunte von United” (1996) and “X” (1999) are also live recordings, both captured by formidable sound master Carlos Albrecht. A number of changes have occurred since the line-up of the legendary UJRE debut “Live im Schützenhaus”. The “Neunte” includes the addition of inspired saxophonist Christof Lauer, bassist Dave King and trumpet sophisticate Kenny Wheeler. On “X”, Lauer and King are accompanied by trumpeter Thorsten Benkenstein and guitarist Peter O’Mara. The result sounds funky in places, more rock-influenced in others, even sometimes taking its cue from the lyrical hymns of Oregon. In any case, the accomplished all-rounders of the UJRE always deliver unorthodox jazz-rock in a class of its own."
