Whyzdom - From The Brink Of Infinity

Debut release from this French gothic metal band. Whyzdom is led by guitarist Vynce Leff, who was formerly involved with two neoprog bands - Saens and Sensitive To Light. He's taken his music in a decidedly harder edged directly while maintaining a big symphonic sound. Vocals are handled confidently by Telya Melane. This larger than life orchestral production suits the music well and reminds a bit of Mother Earth period Within Temptation. Whyzdom has performed at the Female Voices Festival in Belgium and just opened shows for Delain in France. Its clear that their star is on the rise. Highly recommended.

Having read Chris's review above, I can understand how folks could be fairly split on this release. The killer for me was the singing of Telya Melane, which I simply did not care for (Simone Simons or Julie Kiss she ain't). That said, however, these guys are trying hard to do something a little different than the normal goth metal "1 + 1" formula so I'll give them credit for that. Just one person's opinion. Leyth

This is some incredible symphonic gothic metal; the base is a fast, rocking, thundering, often pummeling bass / drum / rhythm guitar against dramatic key / string-driven melodies, with both having lightly proggy time / tempo changes; the female vox are simply amazing but will not be your thing if you prefer conventional female vox - Telya Melane has a strong, expressive, dynamic, versatile style that runs the gamut from warm alto to soaring soprano, from smooth melodic to lightly experimental and adventurous, like a more accessible version of what Julie Kiss does in To-Mera; there is some choir and occasional black vox; the production is the best I've ever heard on a metal CD - it combines room-shaking bass with intoxicatingly smooth treble - no matter how high you crank it the sound refuses to fatigue - amazing - disc of the year for me right now.
