Grails is a US instrumental "post-metal" band (whatever that means). I would be hard pressed to call this metal. Its very dark and doomy and has a strong 70s feel.

"Daniel O'Sullivan's acclaimed Ulver has a tendency to traverse a truly abstract path between the realms of shoegaze, metal and black ambient, while his collaboration with Steve Moore, Miracle, remains firmly rooted in the universe of synth-pop.

Guapo return to the Cuneiform Records and its about f'n time! This one is a killer. Call them experimental or avant garde if you will but at their core Guapo are a prog rock band. Maybe they don't want to incur media backlash but that's the facts (just don't tell anyone you know).

"Much like my addiction to Swiss roll, for some people more is never enough. You’d have thought two wildly successful “day jobs” would be enough to keep some folks busy. But not so for Katatonia lead vocalist Jonas Renkse and The Pineapple Thief front man Bruce Soord.

"Our world was very different 5 years ago. The Pineapple Thief was very much an underground affair, with a small but loyal band of followers. Kscope, a name conjured up by Steven Wilson as a play on kaleidoscope, didn't exist as a label back then.

"If Brian Wilson could operate a laptop...or Pink Floyd were young and skint in 2009……or Wayne Coyne was Scottish….or Grandaddy came from a land of drizzle…or Sigur Ros cracked a smile from time to time…or…we could go on.

"Led by Mark Peters, shoegaze misfits Engineers have been making brilliant records for nearly 10 years now, yet the limelight afforded to similar-sounding bands such as The Horrors has always eluded them. On 'Always Returning', their fourth album, they've delivered yet again.

I'm not sure how a 58 minute disc can be classified as an EP but that's what their new label, Season Of Mist, is calling it. Priced it that was as well so lets just go with the flow.

"Nosound are an interesting band. Much like Porcupine Tree, to which they’re often compared, almost exhaustively, they’re the brainchild of one man. Giancarlo Erra is the motivating force behind the project, lending to it some of his darkest, far flung and original energies.

"Sykli (Cycle in English), the third album from young Finnish team Siinai, is a brilliant example of what happens when a band go in search of not so much the lost chord as the perfect frequency.

"Toundra is one of the most talented and underrated post-rock bands out there. They don’t get the praise or attention they deserve. However, they are always able to top themselves and push the envelope and they’ve proven they don’t know how to release bad albums.

"Like Night Raider, The Resurrectionists is a sprawling, twisted listen, but where the other Crippled Black Phoenix disc from 2009 focused on Western soundscapes and folky Brit-pop ballads, this outing rocks a little harder.

"For 13 years now, the Münster-based four-piece Long Distance Calling has been famed and cherished for its weightless yet massive music. After having returned to their instrumental roots Long Distance Calling sat down to carefully ponder their next step.

"Every so often an album sneaks up on you and leaves you stunned and dazzled in its wake. Over the years Warsaw’s TIDES FROM NEBULA have been plugging away at nurturing their sound, but now they’re on the verge of something spectacular with latest release From Voodoo To Zen.

"The second album from Weserbergland represents a dramatic shift in style. The first album was an homage to the German Krautrock scene. This time they have gone back to the avant garde roots of Krautrock. Gone are the melodies and positive vibrations, Instead sound itself is the focus.

"I don’t normally review compilation albums because I tend to prefer spending my time listening to new, original material rather than giving my thoughts on music that is already well-known and well-established. However, on this occasion, I am willing to make an exception.

"Already a strong contender for most striking album artwork of 2021, Ghost Tapes #10’s cover depicts three corroding jet planes, suspended in space just above the earth. There’s an uncanniness to the image, a captivatingly eerie strangeness that’s both spooky and imposing.
