Vortex was a French jazz rock band with a dark sound that gets them lumped in with Magma when in fact they probably owe just as much to bands like Soft Machine, Univers Zero, as well as composers like Bela Bartok and Igor Stravinsky.  Les Cycles De Thanatos is the band's second album and features an expanded lineup.  Amazing!

No guitar in the band - lots of electric piano, flute, sax.  No chanting!  Merry Go Round Records did an incredible job with the reissues of their two albums (as well as the deluxe box set).

  • Remastered from the oriignal mastertape
  • Gatefold sleeve
  • 4 page insert with rare photos and liner notes

"VORTEX has expanded their lineup from a five piece band(on their debut) to an eight piece band for this one. There are also two guest musicians who each play on one track. I really enjoyed their first one, but this one has topped it as far as i'm concerned. I know I tend to gush when i really like an album, so let's just say this is the perfect record to review on this special day(December 25). The first two songs very much reminded me of one of my favourite bands ZAO, while the over 25 minute epic is like a cross between UNIVERS ZERO and ART ZOYD. Interesting that ART ZOYD actually played on stage with VORTEX to perform this very song. Certainly the album cover has more to do with this self titled track then it does the first two songs. The fact there is a guest basson player on it pretty much says it all doesn't it ?

"God Is Good For You, John" is apparently a reference to John McLaughlin. Once it gets going the air is filled with some beautiful guest violin melodies and intricate sounds. I love this track. It reminds me so much of ZAO. Piano and light drums help to create that jazz flavour. Bass comes to the fore 3 1/2 minutes in. This sounds so good. "Prolegomenes" opens with percussion and cymbals that build as piano, xylophone and horns come in. It kicks into gear 2 1/2 minutes in with drums and sax leading the way. Great sound. The bass becomes more prominant. Check out the drumming that follows. A change 5 minutes in as it becomes more jazzy. Terrific uptempo melody. Percussion before xylophone returns 7 minutes in. A darker more dramatic sound a minute later with some prominant drumming to follow. The uptempo melody of earlier is back to close out the song.

"Les Cycles De Thanatos" begins slowly and darkly with what sounds like solemn sax and basson. This slow moving UNIVERS ZERO("Heresie") flavour continues for over 4 minutes. Then it comes alive, and the sound is filled with suspense and tension as we continue in "Heresie" territory. This is chamber music at it's finest. Incredible intricate sounds come and go including percussion and sax. Amazing stuff. The tempo picks up 16 1/2 minutes in and it's not as dark either. Again we get lots of intricate sounds that are fabulous. An actual catchy rhythm before 21 minutes that turns into an uptempo mind boggling section 2 minutes later. This song has to be heard to be believed. And heard many times to be comprehended. The two bonus tracks begin with "Hipopotalamus Negrus" that quickly shows off the band interplay as we hear a collage of intricate sounds. The last 2 minutes turn into a calm, cool jazzy vibe with smooth sax melodies along with bass, light drums and piano. "Ivanhoe" again features so many different sounds coming and going after the 1 1/2 minute dramatic intro. The sound becomes light and smooth as sax becomes more prominant later on.

This is jaw-dropping music folks. And if your a fan of ZAO or UNIVERS ZERO you owe it to yourself to track this recording down. A must have." - ProgArchives

  • The debut album that sent shockwaves through the progressive underground. Particularly amazing album when you put it into the context of it's recording date - 1970. While far from the best Magma album - in fact the signature sounds are not even in place - it's one smoking jazz rock fusion album owing much to Miles Davis and Soft Machine. 2 cd set.

  • Legit live 2CD radio broadcast recorded in at Sendesaal, Bremen, Germany on 2/6/74 by Radio Bremen.  Magma-philes have been clamoring for an official release for years and MIG Music made it so.It features one of the great touring lineups:Christian Vander - drums & vocalsJannick Top - bassMichel Graillier - keyboardsGerard Bikialo - keyboardsClaude Olmos - guitarKlaus Blasquiz - vocals/percussion"Recorded by Radio Bremen, this double-CD document of a high sonic quality contains a slightly shorter than usual version of MEKANÏK DESTRUKTÏẀ KOMMANDÖH, and represents with the remaining tracks SOWILOI, DRUM SOLO and THEUSZ HAMTAAHK an indispensable supplement to MAGMA's other live albums."

  • "One of the newer zeuhl kids on the block, RHÙN is yet another emerging from France but this band led by the charismatically named Captain Flapattak (drummer, vocalist and head honcho in the vein of Christian Vander) has been around since at least 2008 but took a few years to release its 2012 demo EP " ÏH " and then finally released its debut full-length "Fanfare Du Chaos" the following year. It may have appeared that this band was one and done but here we are an entire decade after and RHÙN is back with its jazzified take on the zeuhl sound with TOZÏH. Ten years is a long time and it's no surprise that TOZÏH features a completely different cast of members with not one returning except the good Captain himself that is. If you're looking for the real zeuhl deal in the vein of the more experimental section of the zeuhl supermarket then you can't go wrong with this fine 21st century release. TOZÏH only three tracks that slink over the 38-minute mark. The opening "Ehmët Um Rhët Sam" wastes no time going for the prog jugular with its 21 1/2 playing time. The second track "Sédalg Rhëvé (incl. Ygahpoporhtna Lrig)" follows with an 11 1/2 minute playing time leaving only the shorter 5 minute "Eripme Cirtcele" to close the album as a sort of outro piece. This Captain really knows how to steer his vessel into the tumultuous zeuhl seas and directs his crew to crank out some seriously tasty chops that are based off the classic Magma sound (think "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh" era) and then add heavy doses of psychedelia, jazz and proggier than usual for zeuhl time signature outbursts. The result is a very satisfying album that offers enough of the traditional touches to keep it firmly planted in zeuhl territory while taking bold measures to add unexpected twists and turns that break the hypnotic spell that this style of music excels at. The term playful has been applied to this band and that's actually a fitting description as the Captain loves to throw a wild zeuhl party, one where all the attendees are having the time fo their life. The band pays homage to the great Magma with Kobaïan script and greater than average drumming prowess in the zeuhl context however RHÙN takes liberties Magma would never even consider making this band sound like a Magma cover band gone rogue by joining a jazz-fusion band and then taking many psychedelic detours. The variations in rhythmic drive and stylistic approaches too often deviate from the Magma playbook. While vocals are a vital aspect of RHÙN's style, there are not lush choirs to be heard here but harmonic counterpoints do grace the album's flow and the eccentric singing style of Ludal Le Chacal more than makes up for any of that. Overall this is a very satisfying zeuhl release and one of the best i've heard in a while but of course this is a style of music that only seems to attract the seasoned pros who are capable of breathing new life into it." - ProgArchives

  • You can hear the evolution of the band as the traditional Magma sounds start to emerge but at it's core it's still not quite there yet. The Coltrane influence is a bit more prominent as is the Teutonic overtones (read --> Wagner). Overall I just think of it as a smoking jazz rock disc!

  • Fantastic Top Gear sessions recorded in London in 1974. This features the classic lineup. Mr. Cuneiform says the versions of Khntark and Wrdh Ith are definitive so who am I to argue?

  • First time on vinyl.  It is a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies, released for Record Store Day."Magma is one of the most influential bands from France. Their music defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, instead they operate in a realm of their own creation. Early in the morning of March 14th 1974, right in the middle of their second UK tour, Magma recorded one session for the John Peel sessions, playing only two pieces, but clocking in at 57 minutes, making it one of the longest, if not thé longest, studio session ever recorded for this show; “Theusz Hamtaahk” (LP 1) & “Köhntarkösz” (LP 2). This session is now available on vinyl for the first time."

  • "Scherzoo is François Thollot's 3rd CD, with a new band, featuring Anthony Béard (bass), François Mignot (guitar), Jeremy Van Quackebeke (piano), Guillaume Lagache (sax alto) & François Thollot (drums). This is his most accomplished effort so far, the band plays tight & the music is an unlikely fusion of Zeuhl & mid/late period of Soft Machine. 6 tracks (including a 19 minutes re-written version of "Voyage au bout de la nuit" which was part of Thollot's first CD - in 2002, then recorded alone as a multi instrumentist)."

  • Magma seems to be on a bit of a roll these days. It wasn't that long ago that they gave us KA and now we have the long rumored Emehntehtt Re. Supposedly an old work from the 70s that was never recorded but bit and pieces have cropped up over the years.

  • Neom is an excellent new Magma influenced band from France. In fact the band has recently been opening for Magma. Arkana Temporis is conceived as in 5 parts spread over 2 acts. The band is a quartet consisting of Fender Rhodes, guitar, bass, and drums with some chanting vocals overlaid. While the Magma influence is quite pronounced Neom also displays an affinity for early 70s jazz rock. The music has a real nice flow to it with some blistering guitar solos with that dirty fuzz sound a la classic Phil Miller. Some of the lighter Rhodes dominated sections remind of Canterbury. If you are fan of bands like Potemkine or Speed Limit and of course Magma you should check out Neom - there is much to dig into here. Highly recommended. These guys smoke - check it out Neom's Home On Myspace

  • One of the great overlooked albums of the 80s. Jean-Paul Prat is a drummer who created this massive composition with a direct influence from Magma. Utilizing a large scale lineup "Masal" is a 42 minute composition of rhythmic fury, horns, reeds, guitars, keyboards. It makes all the right Zeuhl moves magnified by a factor of 10. An epic work that not only encompasses Zeuhl but fusion and symphonic rock as well - but done in a seamless organic way. This profoundly important disc also includes 4 previously unreleased tracks. Highest recommendation.

  • "2020/2021. More than 18 months without being able to make a gig. This space of time, this imposed "pause", was used to prepare a new album, a group album, as we had not realized for a long time. Following the creation of a new line-up in 2020, we once again offered musicians to bring songs, Christian Vander never having made the deliberate choice to be Magma's sole composer. But in fact, none of the dozens of musicians who participated in this adventure had offered a new song for decades ! After "ZËSS", which hinted at a rather gloomy future, this bright and resolutely optimistic new album is the result of a collective work, an "Operation Kartëhl". "In addition to the 6 new pieces of music, the album includes 2 bonus tracks: Demos from Christian Vander’s personal collection, recorded at homeHakëhn Deïs              7:12 (Christian Vander)Do Rïn Ïlï üss             4:38 (Hervé Aknin)Irena Balladina           5:11 (Christian Vander)Walömëhndêm        7:36 (Thierry Eliez)Wiï Mëlëhn Tü         8:54 (Simon Goubert)Dëhndë                      6:55 (Christian Vander) *BonusHakëhn Deïs              6:11   (Christian Vander)Enregistré en 1978 - Christian Vander : Piano, chant – René Garber : chantDëhndë                      6:38   (Christian Vander) *Enregistré en 1978 - Piano, chant : René Garber

  • This is the soundtrack for Yvan Lagrange's 1974 film "Tristan Y Iseult", recorded shortly before the sessions for Kohntarkosz. It is the second movement of Theusz Hamtaahk, an epic work in three movements of which Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh is the final part. Essentially a stripped down version of Magma.Expanded version with extra material and new mastering.

  • Well if you've gotten this far with Magma there probably isn't much I can do to dissuade you from buying this stinker. Shorter tunes, generally weird and annoying. But it does have a cool HR Giger cover so I guess there is something redeeming about it after all. For completists or masochists.
